Between EMIs & Bulldozers, Mehrauli Residents Have Nowhere to Go As the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) continues its demolition drive in Mehrauli, the lives of its residents are in a state of turmoil. A group of protesters, including women, were detained on Sunday for obstructing the DDA and police personnel. Locals have alleged that they were thrashed, a claim that the police have denied.
Manjula Kumari, a single mother of three, is just one of the residents whose life has been turned upside down by the drive. She works as a government employee and bought a 2BHK flat in Pearl Residency with a loan from a government bank. She now faces paying EMIs for the next 17 years while her children’s studies have been disrupted by the ongoing demolition. Many other residents are in a similar position, facing not only the loss of their homes but also the burden of debt that comes with it. For some, the EMIs of their home loans will haunt them for the next decade or more.
The situation is particularly dire for students who are preparing for their upcoming Board exams. The demolition and the disruption it has caused are affecting their studies and putting their future at risk. In light of these events, it is imperative that the government and the DDA take into consideration the impact their actions have on the lives of the people and provide them with a just and fair solution. The residents of Mehrauli deserve a chance to rebuild their homes and their lives without being burdened by debt and fear.
