Bangladesh-India Oil Pipeline: Ensuring Fuel Security and Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina jointly inaugurate the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline (IBFP) from Siliguri (India) to Parbatipur (Bangladesh) via video conferencing, on Saturday.

Bangladesh and India have a long-standing friendship, which has been strengthened through economic cooperation and regional connectivity. The recent inauguration of the Bangladesh-India Friendship Pipeline marks a significant milestone in this partnership, providing a direct and reliable source of fuel to Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has highlighted the importance of this pipeline in ensuring fuel security for Bangladesh during a time of global energy crisis. The world is currently facing an unprecedented challenge, as the Ukraine war has disrupted energy supplies and raised concerns about the reliability of traditional fuel sources. In this context, the Bangladesh-India oil pipeline will play a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted access to fuel, and reducing the country’s dependence on costly imports.

The 131.5-kilometer pipeline, which runs from Siliguri in West Bengal to Parbatipur in Bangladesh, has a capacity of 1 million metric tonnes per annum. This will significantly enhance cross-border trade and increase the volume of oil imports from India to Bangladesh. It is expected to meet the growing demand for fuel in the country, which is expected to increase by 7% annually.

The pipeline will not only provide an economic boost to Bangladesh but will also help to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries. India and Bangladesh share deep cultural and historical ties, which have been strengthened through a shared commitment to regional cooperation and development. The pipeline is one of several projects being undertaken by both countries to enhance connectivity and promote sustainable development.
