India has a unique opportunity to become one of the first nations to industrialise without carbonizing the world, said Amitabh Kant, the G20 Sherpa and NITI Aayog CEO. He made this remark at a virtual event on Wednesday, where he highlighted India’s efforts to achieve sustainable development and green growth in the face of the climate crisis.
He also urged the developed countries to provide adequate climate finance and resources to emerging economies like India, which are facing the dual challenge of poverty eradication and decarbonisation. He said that India has set ambitious targets to increase its renewable energy capacity, reduce its carbon intensity and enhance its forest cover.
He added that India is committed to working with the global community to tackle the climate crisis and ensure a clean and green future for all. Kant also praised India’s leadership role in initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and the Leadership Group for Industry Transition. He said that these platforms demonstrate India’s willingness to share its best practices and innovations with other countries and foster global cooperation on climate action. Kant also emphasised the need for a just and equitable transition to a low-carbon economy, taking into account the different circumstances and capacities of different countries.
He said that India is ready to support other developing countries in their green transition by providing technology, capacity building and financing. He concluded by saying that India’s green ambition is not only good for the planet, but also good for its people and its economy.
