Sasindran Muthuvel is not your ordinary politician. He is the first person of Indian origin to be elected as a governor of a province in Papua New Guinea (PNG), a country in the Pacific Ocean with diverse cultures and languages. He is also the first person to be initiated as a chief of a major clan in his province, earning him respect and recognition from the local people. Muthuvel’s journey began in Sivakasi, a town in Tamil Nadu known for its fireworks industry.

He was born in 1974 to a middle-class family and studied horticulture and business management. In 1998, he moved to PNG to work as a manager in a retail shop. He soon became the managing director of Hamamas Trading Ltd, a retail chain in West New Britain province. He entered politics in 2012, when he contested and won the West New Britain provincial seat in the national parliament. He joined the People’s National Congress Party, led by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, and became the minister of state-owned enterprises.

In 2017, he was re-elected as the governor of West New Britain province, and in 2022, he switched to the Papua and Niugini Union (PANGU) party. Muthuvel has been instrumental in bringing development and peace to his province, which has a population of about 300,000 people. He has initiated projects in health, education, agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, and renewable energy. He has also fostered good relations with the local communities, especially the Nakanai people, who have bestowed him with the title of Chief Swara.

Muthuvel’s achievements have not gone unnoticed in his homeland. In 2014, he received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, the highest honour awarded to an Indian citizen overseas, by then President Pranab Mukherjee. He has also maintained close ties with India and its leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Muthuvel is an inspiration for many Indians who aspire to make a difference in their chosen fields. He is a living example of how hard work, dedication, and adaptability can lead to success and glory.
