In a striking revelation, it has come to light that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has expended a staggering $43 million over the past three years on Mark Zuckerberg’s personal security. This eye-opening figure raises eyebrows, particularly considering Meta’s simultaneous donations to groups advocating for defunding the police.
According to investigative reporter Lee Fang, since 2020, PolicyLink, the organization behind DefundPolice.org, has received $3 million in donations from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI). The group describes itself as a resource hub for advocates and organizers seeking alternatives to traditional policing to foster safer communities. Additionally, CZI, spearheaded by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Pricilla Chan, has granted $2.5 million in financial support to another anti-police organization called ‘Solidaire.’
Remarkably, Meta’s recent filing revealed a $4 million increase in CZI’s spending on Mark Zuckerberg’s personal security. In 2023 alone, the CEO’s security costs reached a staggering $14 million, up from $10 million in previous years. This heightened expenditure reflects Zuckerberg’s critical role and importance to Meta as a company.
Contrastingly, reports indicate that Zuckerberg himself has voluntarily chosen to receive a mere $1 in annual salary, declining any bonus payments, equity awards, or additional financial compensations. Instead, Meta has allocated around $27 million in 2021 for a comprehensive security program ensuring the safety of Mark Zuckerberg, his wife, and their children.
While the emphasis on Zuckerberg’s personal security seems justified given his position and significance within Meta, the revelation of monetary support provided to ‘defund the police’ groups has sparked accusations of hypocrisy. Critics argue that the substantial expenditure on Zuckerberg’s security, coupled with donations to such organizations, creates a contradictory narrative.
It is worth noting that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s wealth has grown exponentially, with a staggering $58.9 billion gained in the first half of this year alone, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
