In the realm of cutting-edge folding smartphones, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold5 holds a prominent position for 2023. Nevertheless, Chinese contemporaries are rapidly narrowing the gap, and Xiaomi’s Mix Fold 3 is the latest entrant to catch up with the Korean tech giant. This third iteration of Xiaomi’s foldable surpasses Samsung’s offering in terms of slimness, albeit it remains exclusive to China.
While Samsung’s Z Fold5 is notably thinner than its predecessor, it still falls short of the slender design achieved by the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3. The latter boasts a thickness of 10.3mm when folded and a mere 5.6mm when unfolded. Weighing in at 259 grams, the Mix Fold 3 is slightly heavier than Samsung’s counterpart.
Like Samsung, Xiaomi has refined the hinge system, rendering it lighter and more robust. Impressively, the Mix Fold 3’s hinge is rated to endure up to 500,000 folds, surpassing the figures claimed by Samsung and Google combined. Equipped with a sizable 8.03-inch primary folding screen, the Mix Fold 3 boasts a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1300 nits. Its 6.56-inch cover display features a broader aspect ratio than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5.
The camera array, tuned by Leica, on the Mix Fold 3 comprises a 50 MP wide-angle lens, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 10 MP regular telephoto lens with 3.2x optical zoom, and an additional 10 MP periscope zoom lens with 5x optical zoom. A 20 MP selfie camera resides on the cover display, capable of recording 1080p videos.
Under the hood, the Mix Fold 3 employs the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC as the Galaxy Z Fold5, albeit with a slightly lower clock speed. It pairs this processing power with a minimum of 12 GB of RAM. Software-wise, the Mix Fold 3 comes with Android 13, overlaid with its custom MIUI 14 skin.
The smartphone houses a dual-cell 4,800 mAh battery, supporting both 67W wired and 50W wireless charging. Remarkably, the base model of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3, equipped with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage, is priced at 8,999 Yuan (approximately Rs 103,000), positioning it as a considerably more budget-friendly option compared to Samsung’s latest foldable. However, it’s important to note that the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is exclusively available in China, setting it apart from the globally accessible Z Fold5.
