Breaking update: Women's Reservation Bill Passes in Lok Sabha - Kruthiga V S

During the Parliament special session today, the Lok Sabha has successfully passed the Women’s Reservation Bill, known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. The bill aims to bring about a transformative change by proposing 33 percent reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and the Assemblies of States and the National Capital Territory of Delhi. This reservation will also be extended to seats reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Historic Reservation: The bill marks a historic milestone by proposing a 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.

Duration: The reservation will remain in effect for a period of 15 years.

Seat Rotation: Seats reserved for women will be rotated after each delimitation exercise.

Implementation Timeline: The government has indicated that, according to existing law, the next delimitation exercise may occur after the first census following the year 2026. Therefore, implementation may not take place before 2029.

The bill’s passage in the Lok Sabha received substantial support, with 454 Members of Parliament (MPs) voting in favor, while only 2 voted against it. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal initiated the discussion on the bill during the special session, emphasizing its significance in empowering women and setting a global example.
