The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has taken legal action by sending a defamation notice worth Rs 100 crore to BJP MP Maneka Gandhi in response to her allegations that the religious organization sells cows to butchers for slaughter. ISKCON vehemently denies these accusations, deeming them “completely unfounded” and expressing deep distress over her remarks.
Radharaman Das, the Vice President of ISKCON Kolkata, stated, “Today we have sent a Rs 100 crore defamation notice to Maneka Gandhi for levelling completely unfounded allegations against ISKCON. The worldwide community of ISKCON devotees, supporters, and well-wishers are deeply pained by these defamatory, slanderous, and malicious accusations. We will not leave any stone unturned in our pursuit of justice against the fallacious propaganda against ISKCON.”
Furthermore, Das highlighted Gandhi’s comments about the Anandapur Gaushala, noting that ISKCON members have not observed her visiting that particular cow shelter. He questioned how she could make allegations about a place she had not visited, emphasizing that her statements lacked credibility.
Das also pointed out that many BJP leaders and leaders from various political parties had condemned Gandhi’s statement. He stated that she has seven days to respond to their notice and added, “If she doesn’t apologize, a defamation suit worth Rs 100 crore will be filed.”
In a recent viral video, Gandhi accused ISKCON of being the “biggest cheat in the country, which sells cows from its gaushalas (cowsheds) to butchers.” She further alleged that ISKCON established Goushalas and received substantial government benefits in the form of extensive lands.
Gandhi claimed to have visited an ISKCON Gaushala in Andhra Pradesh and asserted that she did not find “even a single cow in good condition there.” She alleged that there were no calves in the Gaushala, implying that all of them had been sold, allegations that ISKCON strongly refuted as “unsubstantiated and false.”
