At Moga, Punjab, medical professionals conducted a surgical procedure to extract a variety of foreign objects from the stomach of a 40-year-old man. The patient, who remains in critical condition, is believed to suffer from an eating disorder known as pica. Astonishingly, he has no recollection of ingesting the items.
On Tuesday, Kuldeep Singh was admitted to Moga Medical City Speciality Hospital due to high fever, vomiting, and severe abdominal pain that had plagued him intermittently for two years. His family had only recently been made aware of his discomfort.
Dr. Ajmer Kalra, the hospital’s director, stated that an X-ray revealed a startling discovery: 40 foreign objects lodged inside the patient’s stomach. This assortment included magnets that had attracted other metallic items, forming clusters within his gastrointestinal tract.
A challenging three-hour surgery was conducted by gastroenterologist Dr. Vishavnoor Kalra and surgeon Anup Handa. Images from the procedure revealed a range of objects extracted, including earphones, nuts, bolts, lockets, zippers, shirt buttons, and safety pins.
According to medical experts, the patient’s condition is attributed to pica, an eating disorder characterized by the consumption of non-food items. The ingestion of sharp objects resulted in severe lacerations to his stomach. Despite the successful procedure, the patient remains on a ventilator in critical condition.
This unique case marks the first of its kind at the hospital. The patient’s family reported that he had been troubled and grappling with a mental ailment, which likely prompted him to swallow these numerous objects.
In summary, a man in Punjab with a pica condition underwent a surgical procedure to remove 40 foreign objects from his stomach, including magnets, earphones, nuts, bolts, and more. The patient’s critical condition is attributed to the sharp objects ingested due to his eating disorder.
