In a fortunate turn of events, vigilant operators of the Udaipur-Jaipur Vande Bharat Express averted a potential disaster by promptly detecting stones and iron rods on the railway track in Bhilwara, Rajasthan, and applying the emergency brakes to halt the train.
According to Capt. Shashi Kiran, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of North Western Railway, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has registered a case under the Railways Act in response to the incident. The alarming discovery was made in the Gangarar-Soniyana section at approximately 10 am, within the jurisdiction of SHO/Gangarar in Chittaurgarh district.
The train, numbered 20979 Vande Bharat Udaipur-Jaipur, came to a stop at KM no 158/18, 158/19 due to the presence of ballast on the track and two one-foot-long rods on the joggle plate at the mentioned location. If not for the timely application of the emergency brakes, the train could have derailed, emphasized the railway official.
Officials from various departments, including DSC/Ajmer, IPF/Bhilwara, PWI/Gangarar, local Police, and GRP, promptly visited the site to assess the situation. DSC/Ajmer informed SP/Chittaurgarh, and RPF initiated the registration of a case under the Railways Act. PWI/Gangarar is also submitting an FIR to SHO/Gangarar, ensuring a comprehensive investigation.
A video circulating on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), shows stones, rail fasteners, and iron rods deliberately placed on the railway tracks, adding gravity to the situation.
Notably, this is the third Vande Bharat train in Rajasthan to experience such incidents. Across the country, Vande Bharat trains have faced challenges related to stone pelting since the inaugural run in February 2019, resulting in damages worth Rs 55.60 lakh. Fortunately, there have been no casualties due to these incidents. To date, authorities have arrested at least 151 individuals involved in stone-pelting incidents, and 34 Vande Bharat trains are operational across India.
Former Union Minister and BJP MP Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore expressed concerns about a potential conspiracy to derail the Vande Bharat Express on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address a rally. He called for an immediate investigation by the Rajasthan Police to identify and apprehend those responsible.
