Reliance Jio has achieved a significant milestone by demonstrating India’s first satellite-based gigabit internet service. Named JioSpaceFiber, this groundbreaking technology was unveiled at the India Mobile Congress. Reliance Jio is collaborating with Luxembourg-based satellite communications company SES to offer medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellite internet. They claim that SES’s O3v and o3b mPOWER networks are the sole MEO constellation capable of delivering high-speed internet akin to fiber from space.
In contrast to the more conventional approach of using low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites for high-speed satellite internet, JioSpaceFiber relies on MEO satellites, which orbit at an altitude between 250 and 2,000 kilometers above Earth. Services like Starlink from SpaceX and OneWeb, supported by India’s Bharti group, utilize LEO technology to provide low-latency, high-speed internet.
It’s worth noting that JioSpaceFiber appears to require larger satellite dishes for access compared to LEO-based services, which can be accessed with smaller terminals. Reliance Jio has already connected four remote locations with this technology, including Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabarangpur in Odisha, and Jorhat in Assam.
This achievement holds promise for bringing high-speed internet access to previously inaccessible areas in India.
