Despite both companies successfully developing and demonstrating the technology, the dissolution of the partnership is attributed to the technology’s limited adoption by smartphone manufacturers. Qualcomm noted that manufacturers have shown a preference for standards-based solutions for satellite-to-phone connectivity, leading to the discontinuation of efforts on the proprietary solution introduced earlier this year.

While ending this specific partnership, Qualcomm affirmed its commitment to collaborating with Iridium on standards-based solutions. The decision aligns with the industry’s shift towards standardized approaches in satellite connectivity.
