India is actively involved in the ongoing appeal process against the death sentences imposed on eight former Indian Navy personnel by a Qatari court. The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, emphasized that the government is in communication with Qatari authorities and committed to providing legal and consular assistance.
The individuals, affiliated with the private company Al Dahra, were sentenced on October 26, prompting India to express profound shock and pledge to explore all legal avenues. An appeal has since been filed, and the case is now within the legal proceedings of Qatar’s Court of Appeal. Bagchi urged against speculation given the sensitive nature of the case.
The charges against the navy veterans, arrested in August the previous year, reportedly relate to espionage. The Ministry of External Affairs underscored the high importance of the case and the pursuit of all legal options. The Qatari court has maintained confidentiality regarding the judgment in this case.
Former military officials revealed that the accused had distinguished careers of up to 20 years in the Indian Navy, holding significant roles, including instructors. The charges were filed on March 25, and the former naval personnel were tried under Qatari law.
In May, Al-Dhara Global ceased operations in Doha, leading to the return of all personnel, primarily Indians. The Navy had previously advocated for the release of these individuals with the government’s top brass.
The news underscores the gravity of the situation, with the appeal process underway, and India remains hopeful for a positive outcome.
