Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the trend of “big families” conducting weddings abroad, urging citizens to host celebrations on Indian soil to retain the country’s economic wealth. In his Mann Ki Baat radio address, Modi emphasized prioritizing products made in India while shopping for weddings during the ongoing wedding season, estimated to generate around Rs 5 lakh crore in business.
Modi questioned the necessity of families opting for overseas weddings, stressing that celebrating such occasions within the country would keep the money circulating domestically. He encouraged citizens to engage local services and contribute to the nation’s economy, even suggesting the expansion of the ‘Vocal for Local’ mission to include wedding ceremonies.
Highlighting the success of the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign, Modi underscored its role in transforming the economy. He noted the increasing enthusiasm among people, including children, in choosing products made in India, both in physical stores and online.
The Prime Minister asserted that the ‘Vocal For Local’ campaign guarantees employment, development, and balanced progress across urban and rural areas. Emphasizing the campaign’s role in providing equal opportunities, value addition to local products, and safeguarding the economy during global economic fluctuations, Modi called it a key factor in ensuring a developed and prosperous India.
Modi also acknowledged the decline in cash payments during Diwali, citing the success of digital payments. Encouraging citizens to embrace digital transactions, he urged them to exclusively use UPI or other digital mediums for one month and share their experiences afterward.
The Prime Minister concluded by expressing optimism about the positive impact of the digital revolution in India and encouraged citizens to share their digital payment experiences.
