Security Review Initiated by Lok Sabha Speaker Following Major Breach in Parliament - Kruthiga V S

In a grave breach of security, two individuals infiltrated the Lok Sabha, creating panic during a session. Dramatic footage displayed one person jumping over benches, while another was seen spraying tear gas from the public gallery. The incident, occurring on the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 parliament attack, raised concerns, although police sources clarified that it was not linked to the earlier attack.

Identified as Manoranjan D and Sagar Sharma, the intruders were apprehended, and preliminary investigations revealed tear gas canisters concealed in one suspect’s shoes. Simultaneously, a man and a woman outside Parliament with colored smoke canisters were also detained. The breach prompted LoP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to label it a security lapse, particularly poignant on the solemn anniversary.

Notably, the incident transpired days after Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun threatened an attack on the new Parliament building. However, authorities stated no connection between Pannun’s threat and the breach. Amid the chaos, BJP member Rajendra Agrawal adjourned proceedings, and an investigation into potential security lapses in the new Parliament building was called for by Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi.

The Lower House’s security protocols involve three tiers, encompassing metal detectors at entry gates and hand-held metal detector frisking. Additionally, a stringent no-mobile-phone policy is enforced in certain areas. The incident underscores the imperative need for a comprehensive security review to prevent future breaches.
