What Happened in Parliament? 128 Opposition MPs Suspended - Explained

In an extraordinary move, Lok Sabha Chairman Om Birla suspended a total of 128 Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha over a span of two days during the ongoing winter session of Parliament. The suspensions were a consequence of disruptive actions, primarily the display of placards, leading to a breach of parliamentary decorum.

On Tuesday, Lok Sabha Chairman Om Birla wielded his authority to suspend key opposition figures, including NCP leader Supriya Sule, Congress MPs Manish Tewari, Shashi Tharoor, Md Faisal, and Karti Chidambaram, TMC’s Sudip Bandhopadhyay, Samajwadi Party’s Dimple Yadav, and Bahujan Samaj Party’s Danish Ali. The suspension, effective for the remainder of the winter session, was initiated by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal.

The motion for suspension was brought forth by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal, citing the members’ involvement in displaying placards. The decision to suspend received unanimous support from all MPs, emphasizing a collective agreement to refrain from such disruptive actions within the newly inaugurated Parliament building.

The previous day saw the suspension of 78 MPs—33 from Lok Sabha and 45 from Rajya Sabha—bringing the total number of suspended MPs to an unprecedented 128. Notable figures such as Jairam Ramesh, KC Venugopal, and Randeep Singh Surjewala from the Congress party were among those suspended. Their suspension will endure until a comprehensive report is submitted by the panel.

The suspended MPs had been demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the security breach in Parliament on December 13. This marks the first instance in 34 years where such a substantial number of opposition MPs have faced suspension in Parliament.

In a parallel development in Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee for mimicking him during a protest within the Parliament premises. The incident was marked by Banerjee’s mimicry of the Vice President, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi filmed the act on his phone.

The winter session of 2023 is witnessing a rare and historic event, as the suspension of 128 MPs underscores the heightened tensions and disruptions within the Parliament, raising questions about the efficacy of parliamentary decorum and the ability to conduct meaningful debates.
