The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, has excluded Aadhaar from its list of documents for verifying the date of birth (DoB). This decision aligns with a directive from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which oversees Aadhaar. Going forward, alternative documents must be provided for date of birth verification.
UIDAI observed that entities, including EPFO, were using Aadhaar as evidence of the date of birth (DoB). However, UIDAI clarified that while Aadhaar serves as a unique identifier, it doesn’t meet the criteria for establishing the date of birth, as per the Aadhaar Act, 2016.
Aadhaar, a 12-digit ID, is issued based on residents’ demographic and biometric information. The date of birth recorded is claimed by the resident during enrolment/updation, based on documents submitted and specified on the UIDAI website.
Referring to a December 20, 2018 office memorandum from MeitY, UIDAI emphasized that an Aadhaar number can establish identity subject to authentication but is not proof of the date of birth.
In line with UIDAI’s stance, EPFO stressed that Aadhaar should not be considered evidence of the date of birth, emphasizing its non-qualifying status in this regard. This decision has received approval from the Central Provident Fund Commissioner (CPFC).
