In Kota, Rajasthan, tragedy struck as an 18-year-old JEE aspirant took her own life just two days before her examination. The young girl, grappling with the pressure of the upcoming JEE Mains, left behind a heartbreaking suicide note for her parents, expressing her inability to cope with the expectations. She referred to herself as “the worst daughter” and lamented her perceived failure in meeting academic demands.
This devastating incident marks the second suicide in Kota within a week, underscoring the urgent need to address the mental health challenges faced by students in the city’s competitive academic environment. Earlier, on January 23, another student from Uttar Pradesh, Mohammad Zaid, ended his life while preparing for NEET, further highlighting the grim reality of the situation.
Kota, renowned for its coaching institutes catering to engineering and medical aspirants, has been grappling with a distressing trend of student suicides, with 29 reported cases in 2023 alone. The absence of a suicide note in Zaid’s case amplifies the complexity of the issue, shedding light on the silent struggles and immense pressure faced by students pursuing their dreams amidst intense academic competition.
Authorities and educational institutions in Kota are now confronted with the critical task of addressing the underlying causes contributing to the alarming rise in student suicides. Efforts to prioritize mental health support and create a conducive learning environment are imperative to prevent further tragedies and safeguard the well-being of aspiring students.
As the community mourns the loss of promising young lives, there is a pressing call for collective action and concerted efforts to foster a culture of empathy, support, and mental wellness within the academic ecosystem of Kota and beyond.
