Moments after President Droupadi Murmu nominated Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha, the former Infosys Foundation chairperson expressed her happiness and surprise, emphasizing the opportunity to contribute on a larger scale. Speaking to CNN-News18, she mentioned, “I hope I will do some work because I get a bigger platform…to my country.”
The 73-year-old philanthropist from Karnataka sees this nomination as a chance to further serve the nation. Despite not receiving a call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she gracefully accepted the nomination.
The President of India nominates individuals for their contributions to arts, literature, sciences, and social services. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Murty, highlighting her presence in the Rajya Sabha as a powerful testament to Nari Shakti, coinciding with International Women’s Day.
Sudha Murty, known for her philanthropy and simplicity, is the wife of Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy and the mother-in-law of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. She received the Padma Bhushan in 2023 and the Padma Shri in 2006 for her social work.
As Sudha Murty prepares to fulfill her responsibilities in the Rajya Sabha, her family expressed joy, stating, “Our family is happy that she received this prestigious responsibility. We feel she richly deserves this nomination.”
