The Pakistan Cricket Board has reinstated Babar Azam as the captain of the national team for white-ball cricket, including ODIs and T20Is, ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. This decision comes after Babar stepped down from the captaincy following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Shan Masood retained the Test captaincy, while Shaheen Afridi led the T20I side during Babar’s absence.
After a period of uncertainty surrounding the leadership role, the PCB’s selection committee unanimously recommended Babar Azam for the white-ball captaincy. This appointment signifies Babar’s return to a pivotal role within the team structure, aiming to lead Pakistan to success in limited-overs cricket.
In earlier discussions, reports indicated that Babar was inclined to resume the captaincy only if given the opportunity to lead across all formats. The PCB’s decision to appoint him as the white-ball captain aligns with Babar’s aspirations and the team’s strategic objectives.
Meanwhile, Shaheen Afridi, who previously captained the T20I side, reportedly expressed disappointment over not being informed about the decision to replace him. Despite his willingness to step down if required, Shaheen felt overlooked in the decision-making process, highlighting the need for transparent communication within the team management.
Shaheen’s stint as captain began with a challenging T20I series against New Zealand, where Pakistan faced a 1-4 defeat. Additionally, his team Lahore Qalandars endured a disappointing campaign in the recent Pakistan Super League, finishing at the bottom of the points table.
As Babar Azam takes charge of the white-ball squad once again, the focus shifts towards preparing for the upcoming T20 World Cup. With renewed leadership and determination, Pakistan aims to make a mark on the global stage, backed by Babar’s experience and expertise.
