The Rig, touted as the world’s first tourism destination on a former offshore oil platform, is poised to welcome up to 10,000 visitors, according to its chief executive. The ambitious adventure tourism megaproject spans 300,000 square meters and boasts 70 attractions, 800 hotel rooms, and 11 restaurants across four distinct areas.
Situated 40 kilometers off Saudi Arabia’s east coast, near the Berri oilfield and Al Juraid Island, The Rig aims to draw one million visitors annually. This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 program, which prioritizes diversification of the economy away from oil.
Tourism Minister Ahmed Al Khateeb has underscored the country’s commitment to investing $800 billion in tourism over the next decade, with the goal of increasing the sector’s contribution to GDP to 10 percent by 2030.
The Rig stands out among Saudi Arabia’s tourism initiatives, offering unparalleled experiences across its four rigs: The Jackup, The Derrick, The Riser, and the Moonpool. From ziplining over the sea to submarine excursions beneath the water, The Rig promises a blend of adventure and luxury.
Guests will have various transportation options to reach The Rig, including helicopter, ferry, yacht, or cruise ship, with space available for up to 50 berths in the marina.
Each rig offers a unique experience, with highlights such as an immersive theater on The Jackup, extreme sports and adventure activities on The Riser, and an underwater restaurant and diving center on The Moonpool.
Environmental sustainability is a key focus of The Rig, with measures in place to protect the natural habitat surrounding Juraid Island. Efforts to enhance coral reefs and preserve local flora and fauna will provide guests with a dynamic and eco-conscious destination.
As The Rig progresses from the engineering stage to construction, it is expected to become a global attraction, with an estimated investment likely to surpass $5 billion.
While an official opening date is yet to be confirmed, the project is poised to transform offshore oil platforms into vibrant entertainment hubs, offering a blend of adventure, luxury, and environmental stewardship.
The Rig represents a bold step towards realizing Saudi Arabia’s vision for a diversified and sustainable future, where tourism plays a central role in driving economic growth and fostering international engagement.
