Three Indians Arrested in Canada for Murder of Khalistani Terrorist

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has stated that India will await information from Canadian authorities regarding the arrest of three Indian nationals charged with the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year. The suspects, identified as Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karan Brar, were apprehended in Edmonton, Alberta, and face charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Investigations by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) indicate a potential link between the arrested individuals and the Indian government. However, Jaishankar emphasized the need for concrete evidence before drawing any conclusions. He highlighted concerns about Canada’s tolerance of organized crime from Punjab, urging cooperation to address the issue.

Nijjar’s assassination in British Columbia prompted an extensive investigation, resulting in the recent arrests of the three suspects. While the RCMP continues to explore connections and potential accomplices, Assistant Commissioner David Teboul emphasized the ongoing nature of the inquiry, suggesting additional arrests may follow.

Sanjay Verma, India’s High Commissioner to Canada, expressed confidence in Canadian law enforcement’s handling of the case, emphasizing its internal nature. However, he reiterated the importance of regular updates to the Indian consulate regarding the progress of the investigation.

Separately, Jaishankar addressed concerns about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s criticism of India, attributing it to internal politics. He cited the influence of pro-Khalistan factions on Canadian politics, which have hindered extradition efforts and strained bilateral relations.

Despite India’s repeated requests for extradition and evidence sharing, Canada has not cooperated, citing political considerations. Jaishankar underscored the need for evidence-based dialogue and mutual cooperation to address shared security concerns.

The killing of Nijjar has sparked a diplomatic row between India and Canada, with Prime Minister Trudeau raising unsubstantiated allegations of Indian government involvement. India has vehemently denied these accusations, emphasizing the need for evidence-based diplomacy.
