Weather Disrupts Mumbai: Dust Storm and Downpour Impact Flight Operations

Mumbai residents experienced a sudden change in weather as dark clouds and heavy rain swept across the city, bringing relief from scorching temperatures. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for certain areas on May 13, warning of thunderstorms and gusty winds, particularly in Thane and Raigad districts.

Gusty winds and overcast skies heralded Mumbai’s first rainfall of the season, with heavy downpours reported in western suburbs like Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, and Goregaon. Power outages were reported in parts of Navi Mumbai, while a hoarding collapse in Ghatkopar trapped individuals and damaged vehicles.

Vehicular movement was hampered at Pooja Junction (Wadala) North Bound and Freeway Tunnel Trombay South due to the fallen hoarding. Social media platforms buzzed with updates and visuals of the weather phenomenon, with users expressing relief as temperatures dipped marginally.

Before the showers, Mumbai recorded maximum temperatures ranging between 33 and 34 degrees Celsius. The IMD also issued an orange alert for districts like Kolhapur, Satara, Pune, Ahmednagar, Nashik, and parts of Vidarbha in the coming days.

Several Mumbai-bound flights were diverted due to adverse weather conditions. Vistara Flight UK272 from Male to Mumbai was rerouted to Goa, with an expected arrival time of 17:20 hours. Similarly, a Jaipur-Mumbai flight was also redirected to Goa.

Amidst the disruption caused by the dust storm and heavy rain, Mumbai residents grapple with the sudden transition in weather patterns, underscoring the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of natural calamities.
