Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a crucial meeting on Monday to review the security situation in violence-hit Manipur. He announced that the Home Ministry will soon hold talks with both the Meitei and Kuki communities to bridge the ethnic divide and foster harmony in the northeastern state.
During the meeting, Shah received a detailed briefing on the prevailing situation from top security officials. He emphasized that the central government is fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens in Manipur.
The Home Minister directed officials to take strict legal action against those involved in violence. He also instructed an increase in the deployment of central forces in Manipur, if needed, to ensure peace and tranquility.
Shah reviewed the conditions in relief camps and directed authorities to ensure the proper availability of food, water, medicines, and other basic amenities for those affected. He also called for adequate health and education facilities for displaced people and their rehabilitation.
This meeting is the first of its kind by the central government after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was re-elected earlier this month. It follows a meeting between Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey and Amit Shah, where the governor apprised him of the law and order situation in the state.
Notably, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh was not present at the meeting. Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka, Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande, Army Chief-designate Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi, and other senior officials attended the hour-long session.
Ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, following a tribal solidarity march protesting the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. Since then, over 220 people from both the Kuki and Meitei communities and security personnel have been killed in the continuing violence.
Shah stressed the importance of extending immediate and effective support to the affected communities. He called for strategic deployment of forces along highways and other critical areas to restore order.
The central government’s statement reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens in Manipur. Shah’s directives aim to bridge the ethnic divide and promote peace through dialogue and strict enforcement of the law.
The Home Ministry’s efforts are focused on providing relief and support to displaced individuals, ensuring their access to basic amenities, and fostering an environment of peace and harmony in the state.
