Bombay High Court Criticizes Mumbai

The Bombay High Court expressed shame over the conditions faced by commuters on Mumbai local trains, noting the high mortality rates. Chief Justice Devendra Upadhyaya demanded affidavits from railway officials and highlighted the daily struggle of passengers. A Public Interest Litigation by Yatin Jadhav brought attention to these issues, with data showing about five deaths daily among commuters. The court may set up a committee to address this serious problem.

The court remarked that commuting in Mumbai locals is akin to going to war, given the fatalities. Advocate Rohan Shah pointed out that commuters often fall from overcrowded trains or meet accidents while crossing tracks. Despite the introduction of AC trains, lower-income groups still face severe risks in non-AC trains. The court emphasized that railways must change their attitude and mindset to ensure commuter safety.
