AAP to Contest Delhi Assembly Elections Solo, No Alliance with Congress: Gopal Rai

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has officially announced that it will contest the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections without forming an alliance. Delhi Minister Gopal Rai clarified on Thursday that the previous alliance with the Congress was specific to the Lok Sabha elections and will not extend to the Delhi Assembly polls.

The Assembly elections are scheduled to take place early in 2025. This decision was made following a meeting held with AAP Delhi MLAs at the Chief Minister’s residence in New Delhi. During the meeting, AAP legislators were instructed to resume development work in their respective constituencies every Saturday and Sunday.

The Delhi Minister also highlighted that development work in the city had been halted due to the Model Code of Conduct imposed for the Lok Sabha elections. With the conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections, AAP aims to refocus on local governance and development.

AAP has scheduled a meeting of Delhi Councillors for Saturday, June 8, and another meeting with party workers on June 13. These meetings are expected to strategize for the upcoming Assembly elections and address the party’s recent performance issues.

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, AAP contested 22 seats across five states: Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, and Assam. However, the party managed to secure victory in only three seats in Punjab. This result was a significant setback, especially given AAP’s strong performance in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections where it won 92 of the 117 seats.

The Election Commission data revealed that AAP led in only 33 assembly segments out of the 117 that are part of the 13 Lok Sabha constituencies in Punjab. This outcome has prompted the party to reassess its strategies and focus more on grassroots development work.

The decision to go solo in the Delhi Assembly elections marks a significant shift in AAP’s electoral strategy. The party, led by Arvind Kejriwal, aims to capitalize on its governance record and local popularity to secure a strong mandate in the upcoming elections.

As the Delhi Assembly elections approach, AAP’s focus will be on reinforcing its development agenda and addressing the local issues that resonate with the voters. The party’s ability to deliver on its promises and maintain its support base will be crucial for its success in the 2025 elections.
