Ajit Doval Reappointed as National Security Advisor by Modi Government

The Modi-led government has reappointed former IPS officer Ajit Doval as the National Security Advisor (NSA) and former IAS officer Dr. PK Mishra as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister. Their appointments will last as long as PM Modi’s term or until further orders, according to a government statement.

Ajit Doval, a 1968 batch IPS officer, previously served as the Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief and first became the NSA in 2014. As the NSA, Doval will advise PM Modi on national and international security issues. His reappointment highlights his ongoing critical role in the government’s security framework.

The official order from the Personnel Ministry stated that Doval’s reappointment as NSA is effective from June 10, 2024. The order was issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, affirming his significant position within the administration.

Alongside Doval, Dr. PK Mishra has been reappointed as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister. Mishra, a former IAS officer, will serve in this role under the same terms as Doval, with his appointment being co-terminus with the Prime Minister’s term or until further orders.

Doval, who was born on January 20, 1945, in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, joined the Indian Police Service in 1968. His distinguished service earned him the Kirti Chakra in 1988, and he was the youngest officer to receive the Indian Police Medal.

The National Security Council (NSC), headed by the NSA, is primarily responsible for advising the Prime Minister on security-related matters. Under Doval’s leadership, the NSC will continue to play a crucial role in shaping India’s security policies.

During his tenure, Doval will hold the rank of Cabinet Minister, with the terms and conditions of his appointment to be specified separately. His extensive experience and expertise in security matters underscore his importance in the current administration.

The NSA post, first created in 1998 following the country’s second round of nuclear tests, has become a pivotal position in India’s security apparatus. Doval’s reappointment reflects his significant contributions and the trust placed in him by the government.

This reappointment ensures continuity in the country’s security strategy and highlights the government’s confidence in Doval’s capabilities. Both Doval and Mishra’s roles are crucial as India navigates complex national and international security challenges.
