In the past 24 hours, Gujarat has witnessed a distressing surge in heart-related incidents during the festive Garba dance of Navratri. Ten individuals, ranging from teenagers to middle-aged adults, tragically succumbed to heart attacks. The youngest victim, a 13-year-old boy from Dabhoi, Baroda, is among those lost.
Several cases mirrored this tragedy, including a 24-year-old man from Ahmedabad and a 17-year-old boy from Kapadwanj, both collapsing during Garba and subsequently passing away.
Over the first six days of Navratri, the 108 emergency ambulance services received a staggering 521 calls for heart-related issues and an additional 609 calls for breathlessness, all occurring between 6 pm and 2 am when Garba celebrations traditionally take place.
This concerning trend has prompted swift action by both the government and event organizers. The state government issued an alert to government hospitals and community health centers near Garba venues, emphasizing high alertness.
Event organizers were also directed to establish ambulance corridors for rapid emergency responses.
To ensure participant safety, organizers have stationed doctors and ambulances at venues, providing CPR training to staff and ensuring an ample water supply.
It’s worth noting that even before the Navratri festivities, three individuals in Gujarat had already suffered fatal heart attacks during Garba practice.
