Babar Azam Steps Down as Pakistan Captain After World Cup Disappointment - Kruthiga V S

Pakistan’s cricket star, Babar Azam, announced his resignation as captain across all formats following the team’s lackluster performance in the World Cup 2023 in India. Babar, who struggled with the bat during the tournament, managing 320 runs without a century, made the decision after discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials in Lahore.

In a social media post, Babar expressed, “Today, I am stepping down as the captain of Pakistan in all formats. It’s a difficult decision but I feel it is the right time for this call.” He emphasized his commitment to continue representing Pakistan as a player and pledged support to the new captain and the team.

Babar Azam took on the captaincy role across all formats in 2019, facing both successes and challenges. Despite leading Pakistan to the runner-up position in the 2022 Asia Cup and T20 World Cup, he faced criticism for the team’s performance in home Tests and the recent World Cup in India. Pakistan failed to progress beyond the league stage, finishing fifth on the points table.

Reflecting on his captaincy journey, Babar stated, “I vividly remember the moment when I received the call from PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. Over the past four years, I’ve experienced many highs and lows on and off the field, but I wholeheartedly and passionately aimed to maintain Pakistan’s pride and respect in the cricket world.”

This decision marks a significant shift in Pakistan’s cricket leadership, and Babar Azam expressed gratitude to the PCB for entrusting him with the captaincy role.
