BCCI to Spend over Rs 500 Crore on Stadium Upgrades Ahead of ODI World Cup, Fans Rejoice!

In preparation for the ODI World Cup this October-November, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to undergo a massive upgrade of at least five major stadiums in the country, estimated to cost over Rs 500 crore. Despite the game attracting vast amounts of money, fans have often been left with limited facilities at most venues, leading to a loss of support from the passionate fanbase that has made the game what it is today.

The BCCI has conducted a gap assessment to identify existing gaps between the current and ideal future state of the organization, and as per the list accessed by PTI, the five venues set for renovation are Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mohali, and Mumbai. Wankhede stadium in Mumbai underwent renovation last month after a fan complained about poor sanitary conditions.

The projected cost of renovation runs into hundreds of crores, and it is estimated that it will cost Rs 100 crore to revamp the Delhi stadium, Rs 117.17 crore for Hyderabad, Rs 127.47 crore for Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens, Rs 79.46 crore for the ageing PCA stadium in Mohali, and Rs 78.82 crore for Wankhede. These costs will significantly increase if roof work is involved.

The ICC event will host a total of 48 games across 12 venues, including Bengaluru, Chennai, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Lucknow, Indore, Rajkot, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad, the likely venue for the final. India last hosted the ODI World Cup in 2011, where they lifted the trophy under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. With the upcoming renovations, fans across the country are excited about the prospect of enjoying the games in improved facilities.
