BharatPe Takes Legal Action Against Co-founder Ashneer Grover

Resilient Innovations, the parent company of BharatPe, has initiated legal proceedings against co-founder Ashneer Grover. The company filed a fresh case in the Delhi High Court, seeking an injunction to prevent the disclosure of what it claims to be confidential information regarding BharatPe.

This legal action follows a series of controversies involving Grover, who shared details on social media regarding the equity allocation and secondary components of BharatPe’s recent Series E funding round. The funding round, led by Tiger Global and featuring participation from Dragoneer Investor Group, raised $370 million and valued the fintech firm at $2.86 billion.

BharatPe’s legal team argued in court that Grover’s actions violated obligations outlined in his employment agreement, asserting that he disclosed confidential information about the company. Although Grover deleted the post, BharatPe contends that he still possesses confidential company information post his resignation, thereby violating the terms of his employment agreement.

During a recent hearing presided over by Justice Sachin Dutta, Grover’s counsel reportedly submitted an apology on his behalf for the alleged breach of confidentiality. The court accepted the apology, but the issue of Grover still holding confidential information will be addressed in upcoming hearings.

This legal action is in addition to an ongoing civil suit filed by BharatPe against Grover and his family members. The suit seeks up to Rs 88.67 crore in damages, alleging embezzlement of funds.

The legal dispute between the parties has also involved disagreements over Grover’s social media activity, prompting BharatPe to seek an injunction against what it deems ‘unparliamentary language’ used by Grover in his online posts.

Grover, accompanied by his wife Madhuri Jain, faced questioning by the Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) earlier this week in connection with an alleged fraud case. The police investigation revealed links between at least eight human resource consultancy firms and relatives of Jain, Grover’s wife and former head of controls at BharatPe.

Last week, the duo was stopped at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport based on a look-out circular (LoC) issued against them, requested by the EOW.
