India’s domestic cricket scene anticipates a significant salary boost, potentially doubling current earnings for players. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly working on a plan, aiming to enhance pay scales to range between Rs 75 lakh and Rs 1 crore per annum based on participation in Ranji Trophy matches.
This initiative seeks to address existing pay structures, where players with varying levels of experience receive daily rates ranging from Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000, contingent on the number of Ranji Trophy appearances. The proposed increase aims to better reflect the contributions and dedication of domestic cricketers.
The decision aligns with broader efforts by the BCCI to bolster red-ball cricket within the country. In recent months, the board has introduced several measures to incentivize participation and prioritize the longer format of the game, including the Test Cricket Incentive Scheme.
Implemented from the 2022-23 season onwards, the Test Cricket Incentive Scheme supplements existing match fees for Test matches, set at Rs 15 lakhs. This initiative underscores the BCCI’s commitment to fostering a robust cricketing ecosystem and encouraging players to engage in Test cricket.
Earlier directives from the BCCI emphasized the importance of domestic cricket, urging players to prioritize participation in domestic matches when not representing the national team at the international level. This move underscores the significance of grassroots cricket in nurturing talent and sustaining the sport’s growth.
The potential salary hike for domestic cricketers signifies a step towards recognizing their contributions and providing them with more sustainable livelihoods. By offering competitive remuneration, the BCCI aims to attract and retain talent, ensuring the continued success and development of Indian cricket.
Increased financial incentives for domestic players could have far-reaching implications, not only enhancing the quality of competition but also fostering greater interest and investment in grassroots cricket across the country. This move reflects the BCCI’s commitment to fostering a thriving cricketing ecosystem at all levels.
As discussions progress, stakeholders eagerly await further updates regarding the proposed salary adjustments and their potential impact on the domestic cricket landscape. The BCCI’s proactive approach underscores its dedication to supporting and uplifting the country’s cricketing fraternity.
