In a significant leadership change, edtech giant BYJU’S has named Arjun Mohan as the new CEO for its India operations, succeeding Mrinal Mohit, the outgoing head of India business at BYJU’S. Mohit, who served as a founding partner, departs after a decade-long tenure to pursue personal aspirations, according to the company’s announcement.
Mrinal Mohit led BYJU’s India operations since May last year, allowing BYJU Raveendran, co-founder and group CEO, to focus on international expansion. Raveendran acknowledged Mrinal’s remarkable contributions to the organization and wished him well in his future endeavors.
Arjun Mohan, who previously held the position of Byju’s chief business officer for over 11 years, joined upGrad in April 2020, during the initial wave of the pandemic. He departed from upGrad in December last year in search of new opportunities.
This change comes as BYJU’S seeks to bolster its senior leadership and streamline operations while grappling with financial and operational challenges. The company is currently restructuring its businesses in both India and abroad.
Reports suggest that BYJU’S is considering selling Epic and Great Learning for $800 million to $1 billion as part of its debt-reduction strategy. These acquisitions, made in 2021, could offer a much-needed financial boost.
BYJU’S has been in discussions to raise funds throughout the year, but the company has yet to finalize a deal amid ongoing domestic and international challenges.
In a recent development, BYJU’S allegedly transferred over $533 million to Camshaft Capital Fund in 2022, a fund founded by a 23-year-old. The funds were reportedly used to purchase luxury cars. BYJU’S defended this action, stating it was a part of its investment strategy.
The company emphasized that the Delaware court had previously rejected lender requests for information regarding these funds. BYJU’S entities are not directly involved in the ongoing legal proceedings.
As BYJU’S navigates these challenges, Arjun Mohan’s appointment reflects a commitment to addressing the evolving landscape of EdTech and empowering future generations.
