Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a sweeping ban on TikTok from all government-issued mobile devices, following the lead of the EU and US. The move comes amid growing concerns over data privacy and security, particularly with regards to the Chinese-owned app. Many western officials fear that Beijing may be collecting data on western users or pushing pro-China narratives and misinformation.
Trudeau did not rule out further action, stating that the ban would give Canadians the information they need to make their own choices regarding the security of their data. The EU’s executive branch and European Parliament have also banned staff from using the app on phones used for work purposes. Over half of the US states and Congress have also enacted similar bans.
TikTok is immensely popular with young people, but its ownership by Chinese company ByteDance has raised concerns over the app’s ties to Beijing. The company has previously admitted to using the app to spy on US journalists and has been shown to be less separate from its Chinese ownership than it has claimed.
