New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has assumed control of the investigation into the tragic collision of three trains in Balasore, Odisha. The CBI probe team arrived at the accident site today, taking over from the Odisha police and embarking on a crucial mission to uncover the truth.
The Odisha police have already filed a case, charging “causing death by negligence and endangering life” in connection with the devastating train accident. However, the involvement of the CBI signifies a significant shift, as experts believe that only a thorough investigation by a top agency can determine if there was any intentional tampering with the interlocking system or track configuration.
Railway officials had initially raised suspicions of possible sabotage and tampering with the interlocking system, which detects the presence of trains. The accident involved the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, and a goods train. It resulted in the tragic loss of 278 lives and left over 800 people injured.
While the railways stated that the accident was caused by a signaling problem and not a collision, some railway experts have questioned whether the Coromandel Express may have directly hit the goods train within a “loop line.” A “loop line” is a section that branches off from the main tracks and merges back after a distance to manage heavy rail traffic.
Visual evidence shows the Coromandel Express’ engine resting on top of the goods train, indicating a significant impact.
The CBI inquiry aims to address all queries surrounding the accident, which is the worst in the country in the past two decades. The investigation will consider mechanical errors, human factors, and the possibility of sabotage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to take strict action against those found guilty in this tragic incident.
