In response to Delhi’s deteriorating air quality index (AQI), reaching a concerning 409 at 4 pm, the Central government has activated the third stage of its anti-pollution plan. Unfavorable meteorological conditions, such as fog and low wind speed, are identified as major contributors to the sudden spike. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has consequently prohibited non-essential construction activities and the operation of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers in Delhi-NCR.
The CAQM’s directive encompasses a ban on non-essential construction work, stone crushing, and mining in Delhi-NCR. However, projects related to national security, defense, healthcare, transportation, and essential infrastructure are exempt. Simultaneously, restrictions are imposed on the operation of certain vehicles in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Budh Nagar, aligning with the severity of pollution levels.
The government’s response is part of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), a comprehensive air pollution control strategy implemented during the winter season. GRAP classifies actions into four stages: Poor (AQI 201-300), Very Poor (AQI 301-400), Severe (AQI 401-450), and Severe Plus (AQI>450). Last month witnessed a similar scenario with AQI surpassing 450 in several areas, exacerbated by stubble burning, unfavorable weather, and vehicular pollution.
The onset of winter poses a significant challenge in the region, compounded by stubble burning in neighboring states and adverse meteorological conditions. Delhi-NCR continues to grapple with high pollution levels, necessitating decisive measures to mitigate the impact on public health and the environment. The government’s actions aim to balance the need for essential activities with the imperative of curbing pollution.
As the nation navigates these challenges, it underscores the urgency of a sustained, collective effort to address the complex interplay of factors contributing to deteriorating air quality. The public, policymakers, and stakeholders must remain vigilant and proactive in implementing long-term solutions to ensure a healthier and sustainable future for the region.
