Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, following a meeting with PM Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit, emphasized his commitment to collaborative efforts on important issues amid a period of strained relations between the two nations.
During a press conference on the final day of the three-day summit in Italy, Trudeau expressed his intent to work closely with India, although he refrained from discussing specific details, citing the sensitivity of the issues at hand.
On Friday, PM Modi shared an image on social media of the two leaders shaking hands, captioned, “Met Canadian PM Justin Trudeau at the G7 Summit.” This meeting in Apulia, southern Italy, was their first since diplomatic tensions over pro-Khalistani extremism had escalated. Their previous encounter was at the G20 Summit in India last September.
Following the meeting, Trudeau’s office mentioned that the leaders had a “brief discussion on the bilateral relationship,” with Trudeau congratulating Modi on his re-election. A spokesperson noted, “Of course, there are important issues between our two countries right now. You can appreciate that we won’t be making any further statements at this time.”
Diplomatic relations between India and Canada deteriorated in September after Trudeau implicated India in the June 2023 murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Nijjar was killed by two masked men outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia. India denied any involvement, calling Trudeau’s accusations “absurd” and politically motivated.
The fallout from these accusations led to both countries expelling intelligence officers, reducing diplomatic staff, and halting trade discussions. Nijjar’s murder is currently under investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which has arrested four Indian nationals in connection with the case.
