In a somber turn of events, Tamil actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder-leader, Vijayakanth, succumbed to COVID-19 at the age of 71 in Chennai. The seasoned actor, affectionately known as ‘Captain,’ transitioned from a prolific career in the Tamil film industry to making significant contributions in politics, particularly as a member of the Legislative Assembly.

The mortal remains of Vijayakanth were respectfully placed at Island Ground, Anna Salai, allowing the public to bid their final farewells from 6 am to 1 pm. Political figures, actors, and well-wishers paid their respects, acknowledging his irreplaceable impact on both politics and cinema.

Renowned actor Rajinikanth expressed profound sorrow, emphasizing the uniqueness of Vijayakanth’s legacy. “We will never get a person as good as Vijayakanth. In politics and cinema, there is no one like him. This loss is irreplaceable,” stated Rajinikanth.

Vijayakanth’s significant role as a leader of DMDK was marked by his commitment to public service, leaving an enduring impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly twice, representing the Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies.

Earlier in November, Vijayakanth was admitted to MIOT Hospital in Chennai due to declining health. Suffering from symptoms of coughing and throat pain, he remained under medical observation for 14 days. His demise marks the end of an era, given his 154-film strong career in the South Indian film industry.

Actor Vijay and Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin were among those who paid homage to the late actor at the DMDK office. The tributes underscored Vijayakanth’s multifaceted contributions to both the entertainment industry and political arena.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended condolences, acknowledging Vijayakanth as a legend of the Tamil film world. Modi praised his charismatic performances and deep commitment to public service, emphasizing the void left by his passing.

As the nation mourns the loss of an influential figure, Vijayakanth’s impact on Tamil Nadu’s cultural and political spheres remains indelible. His legacy will be remembered as one that seamlessly bridged the worlds of cinema and politics, leaving an enduring mark on both.
