Daring Night Rescue: Indian Air Force Pilots Use Night Vision Goggles To Land In Sudan

In a bold and daring operation, Indian Air Force pilots used Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) to land their C-130J Hercules transport aircraft on an unprepared runway in the darkness to rescue 121 personnel from a small airstrip in violence-hit Sudan. The airstrip was in a degraded condition, with no navigational approach aids, landing lights, or fuel, making the landing an extraordinary feat of airmanship.

The Air Force pilots’ skillful use of Night Vision Goggles and Electro-Optical/Infra-Red sensors made it possible to carry out the landing without a hitch. As they approached the Wadi Sayyidna airstrip, they scanned the area for obstructions, ensuring a safe touchdown. After landing, the engines were kept running, and eight Garuda commandos from the Air Force’s special forces unit secured the passengers and loaded the luggage into the aircraft. The takeoff was also carried out using NVGs.

The two-hour operation between Wadi Sayyidna and Jeddah is another testament to the Indian Air Force’s sheer audacity to conduct daring operations during a humanitarian crisis. The mission, dubbed ‘Operation Kaveri,’ brought a total of 754 stranded Indians back home from Sudan. 392 people were flown to Delhi in the C-17 transport aircraft, while the remaining 362 Indians were brought to Bengaluru.

The fighting in Sudan is part of the ongoing clashes between the country’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The operation to evacuate stranded Indians in Sudan began earlier this week and has so far brought back a total of 1,360 Indians to India.

The successful night rescue operation in Sudan follows a similar mission carried out in Kabul, Afghanistan, highlighting the Air Force’s capabilities and expertise in carrying out humanitarian missions in conflict zones.

The Indian Air Force’s daring rescue operation showcases the extraordinary skill, courage, and professionalism of its pilots and crew. The use of Night Vision Goggles and Electro-Optical/Infra-Red sensors made the mission possible, demonstrating the Air Force’s commitment to innovation and technology.
