Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman, is now creating a new artificial intelligence company – xAI. The company’s mission is “to understand the true nature of the universe”, according to its website, which went live on Wednesday night.

The team behind xAI consists of Elon Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and former executives and researchers from DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto.

They have been involved in some of the biggest breakthroughs in AI, such as AlphaStar, AlphaCode, Inception, Minerva, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4. The company is independent from X Corp, but it said that it would “work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission”. xAI is expected to compete with ChatGPT, another AI platform that aims to create conversational agents.
