The Indian government is expected to extend the free import of laptops, tablets, and computers until September 30, 2024. Currently, importers need to register their organization and import data in an online portal called the Import Management System. After September 30, 2024, the government plans to review authorization norms and gradually reduce the import quota for finished products. Relief from this quota might be considered on a case-by-case basis, and a standard operating procedure may be introduced.
Background:
Earlier, the Union commerce ministry announced import curbs on laptops, PCs, tablets, and related items, requiring manufacturers to have a valid license and pay duty for importing these products.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) consulted with representatives of the laptop, PC, and tablet industry on August 22.
The government’s goal is to encourage supply chains for these products to originate in India or come from trusted sources.
Importers will need to start registering their organization’s data for the past three years using the Import Management System, which is expected to go live by the end of September. Manufacturers importing components and producing finished products in special economic zones or export-oriented units won’t be affected by these regulations.
This move aims to boost the local manufacturing and sourcing of IT products and reduce India’s reliance on imports in the digital ecosystem.
