In a big relief to the households across India, the Narendra Modi government on Tuesday announced to slash the prices of cooking gas domestic cylinder by ₹200.
At present, a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in the national capital costs ₹1,103 – more than double the rate it came for in May 2020. It will cost ₹903 effective Wednesday when the decision is implemented. For Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries, the price will be ₹703 after considering the continuing ₹200 per cylinder subsidy.
This move will substantially ease the financial burden on households. Starting Wednesday, the same cylinder in New Delhi will cost ₹903, marking a considerable drop in price. For beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), the subsidized price will be even lower at ₹703.
Additionally, the government has announced an allocation of 75 lakh Ujjwala connections, raising the total Ujjwala yojana beneficiaries to 10.35 crore. It’s noteworthy that Ujjwala beneficiaries currently number at 9.6 crore, while there are approximately 31 crore domestic cooking gas users across the nation.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur, while disclosing these decisions following a cabinet meeting, emphasized that the price reduction is a heartfelt gesture from PM Modi to the women of India on the occasions of Onam and Rakshabandhan.
Here is a glimpse of the revised cylinder prices effective from Wednesday across various cities:
(Source: Goodreturns )
New Delhi: ₹903
Mumbai: ₹902.5
Kolkata: ₹929
Chennai: ₹908.5
Bengaluru: ₹905.5
Ahmedabad: ₹910
Hyderabad: ₹955
Patna: ₹1,001
Bhopal: ₹908.5
Jaipur: ₹906.5
Lucknow: ₹940.5
It’s noteworthy that LPG subsidies were ceased by the government in June 2020, causing a shift to market rates for cooking gas. This resulted in the price soaring to ₹1,103 in the national capital.
Amidst India’s dependency on imports for 60% of its natural gas needs, this reduction in LPG prices comes as a significant respite. The government further plans to expedite the distribution of PMUY connections to 75 lakh women from economically weaker backgrounds. This initiative will contribute to a total of 10.35 crore beneficiaries under PMUY.
