Hoysala Temples in Karnataka Designated as India's 42nd UNESCO World Heritage Site - Kruthiga V S

Keshava Temple, Somanathapura

The esteemed Hoysala temples of Belur, Halebid, and Somnathapura in Karnataka, collectively known as the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysala, have been granted a prestigious spot on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage list. This notable inclusion marks India’s 42nd UNESCO World Heritage Site, following closely on the heels of the recognition bestowed upon Rabindranath Tagore’s Santiniketan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in response to this accolade, lauded the temples as a testament to India’s profound cultural heritage. He highlighted the timeless allure and intricate craftsmanship of the Hoysala temples, underscoring their significance in preserving India’s rich cultural legacy.

These temples were nominated as India’s submission for World Heritage consideration for the years 2022-2023. Notably, the ‘Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysala’ had been on UNESCO’s Tentative List since April 15, 2014.

All three of these Hoysala temples are already safeguarded as monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Historical Significance of Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysala

The sacred ensembles of the Hoysalas, constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries, encompass Belur, Halebid, and Somnathapura. These temples maintain a fundamental Dravidian architectural style while incorporating influences from Central India’s Bhumija style, the Nagara traditions of northern and western India, and the Karnataka Dravida modes favored by the Kalyani Chalukyas.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India

The addition of the Hoysala Temples to India’s list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites brings the total count to 42. These sites are recognized for their exceptional cultural and historical significance, contributing to a heightened awareness of heritage preservation.

Significance of World Heritage Listing

When a site is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, it signifies global recognition of its cultural, historical, or natural significance. It often leads to increased awareness and commitment to heritage preservation within the country. Moreover, it opens up avenues for financial support and expert guidance from the World Heritage Committee to protect and conserve these precious sites.
