Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, has been convicted on three counts related to illegal gun possession by a federal jury. This makes him the first child of a sitting US President to be convicted of a crime. The 12-member jury in Wilmington, Delaware, reached its verdict on Tuesday.
Biden was found guilty on the first count of lying about his drug use when purchasing a firearm, facing up to 10 years in prison for this offense. He also faces five years on the second count and another 10 years on the third count, totaling a potential 25-year sentence. The judge has yet to set a sentencing date, but it is expected within 120 days.
Following the conviction, President Joe Biden stated that he respects the judicial process and will support his son as he considers an appeal. The President expressed his and First Lady Jill Biden’s continued love and pride for their son.
Hunter Biden’s case began when he purchased a Colt Cobra .38-caliber revolver in October 2018. During the purchase, he allegedly lied on a federal form about his drug use, a fact later contradicted by his own admission of using drugs at the time. His defense argued that the gun was never used in a crime, and there were no plans to harm anyone.
Hunter initially reached a plea deal in 2023 to avoid trial, but it fell apart, leading to the formal indictment and subsequent trial. Testimonies from his ex-wife, former girlfriend, and sister-in-law detailed his severe addiction during the period when he bought the gun.
President Biden, scheduled to speak at an Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund conference, has stated that despite his son’s legal troubles, he remains focused on his duties and continues to support gun safety initiatives.
The case has drawn significant attention due to Hunter Biden’s high-profile status and the broader political implications, particularly with the upcoming presidential election in November.
