A case has been lodged against Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar for alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct during the Lok Sabha polls campaign. The complaint, filed by BJP MLA Ashwath Narayan, accuses Shivakumar of making a “business deal with the voters” by promising water supply in exchange for votes.
The FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for “bribery” and “undue influence at elections,” as stated by the state’s Chief Electoral Officer.
The Karnataka unit of the BJP alleges that Shivakumar violated poll conduct by promising to ensure water supply in exchange for votes for the Congress. Shivakumar, however, refutes the allegations, stating that he was merely communicating to the people that the Congress government was committed to addressing their issues.
This isn’t the first time the BJP has approached the poll body against Shivakumar. Earlier, a complaint was filed accusing him of making “false and unsubstantiated” allegations about the BJP’s role in bringing down a “Vokkaliga Chief Minister,” referring to former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy.
In 2019, the BJP formed the government after the collapse of the JD(S)-Congress coalition led by HD Kumaraswamy. The complaint highlighted Shivakumar’s alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct by making false allegations based on caste and communal sentiments, particularly targeting the Vokkaliga community.
