India Generates Rs 1,163 Crore Revenue by Selling Scrap, Equivalent to Budget of Two Chandrayaan-3 Missions - Kruthiga V S

In a noteworthy development, the Narendra Modi government has accumulated nearly Rs 1,163 crore in revenue by selling scrap since October 2021. This includes a substantial amount of Rs 557 crore earned during a month-long campaign in October. A staggering 96 lakh physical files have been discarded from central government offices since October 2021, resulting in the liberation of nearly 355 lakh square feet of office space.

The revenue figure of Rs 1,163 crore highlights the success of the government’s cleanliness program, driven by PM Narendra Modi and spearheaded by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances. The funds generated could potentially fund two Chandrayaan-3 missions, each estimated at Rs 600 crore.

The breakdown of revenue shows that out of the Rs 556 crore earned this year from selling scrap, the Ministry of Railways secured nearly Rs 225 crore, followed by the Defence Ministry at Rs 168 crore, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas at Rs 56 crore, and the Coal Ministry at Rs 34 crore. Additionally, significant space liberation occurred, with the Ministry of Coal and the Ministry of Heavy Industry leading in freed square footage.

A notable achievement in the cleanliness campaign is the discarding of 24 lakh physical files this year, with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Department of Military Affairs leading in file disposals. The overall adoption of e-files has risen to nearly 96% in the government, reflecting the campaign’s impact. The campaign covered nearly 2.58 lakh office sites in the current year.

“The Special Campaign 3.0 for institutionalizing swachhata (cleanliness) and reducing pendency represents India’s largest-ever campaign for swachhata in office spaces. The month-long campaign conducted in 2,58,673 offices across India and abroad resulted in freeing up 164 lac sq ft of office space, weeding of 24.07 lakh physical files, and earned revenues of Rs 556.35 crore from the disposal of office scrap,” stated V Srinivas, Secretary, DARPG.

This significant initiative aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision, aiming to institutionalize swachhata practices in government offices.
