In a thrilling final at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, the Indian women’s kabaddi team secured the gold medal, marking India’s 100th medal in the competition. Facing a determined Chinese Taipei team, the Indian squad narrowly clinched victory with a score of 26-25.
This victory marked India’s third gold in women’s kabaddi since its introduction to the Asian Games in 2010. India had previously won gold in the 2010 and 2014 editions but settled for silver in 2018 after losing to Iran in the final.
The final showdown against Chinese Taipei proved to be an intense battle, with both teams giving it their all. At halftime, India led 14-9, thanks in part to a stellar super raid by Pooja, who emerged as a standout player in the match.
The second half witnessed an exchange of leads, with Chinese Taipei narrowing India’s lead to 16-14. With less than five minutes left on the clock, Chinese Taipei managed to take the lead at 21-19, capitalizing on a crucial video referral.
The match continued to intensify, with the scoreline reading 22-22, 23-23, and then 24-24. In the closing moments, a decisive raid by Pushpa earned India a crucial point, putting them ahead at 25-24. Chinese Taipei managed to secure one more point, but India held on for a 26-25 victory.
Captain Ritu Negi’s strategic decision to send Pooja for a raid in a critical moment played a pivotal role in India’s win. The hard-fought victory was a result of years of dedicated effort by the Indian team, especially after their silver medal finish in the 2018 Asian Games.
“We worked really hard after losing the gold in the 2018 Asian Games. We waited for five years, but our hard work paid off,” said Captain Ritu Negi.
Coach Edachery Bhaskaran acknowledged the strength of the Chinese Taipei team and stressed the need for continuous improvement.
“Chinese Taipei are now a very strong side. They have trained in India in the past and will keep on improving. We also have to work harder and maintain our hold,” Bhaskaran remarked.
This gold medal marked a significant milestone for India in the Asian Games, with the nation celebrating its 100th medal in the competition.
