On April 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a new integrated terminal building at the Chennai airport and launched several infrastructure projects during his visit to the city. The new terminal building has been set up at a total cost of Rs 2,437 crore and is a state-of-the-art facility that will boost connectivity and benefit the local economy.
With the completion of the first phase, the new terminal building will increase the airport’s capacity from the current 23 million passengers per year to an annual capacity of 30 million passengers. Once the second phase is completed, the airport’s capacity is expected to increase to 35 million per year.
The new integrated terminal is spread across 2.20 lakh sq metres and will cater to the growing air traffic in Tamil Nadu. It features 100 check-in counters, 108 immigration counters, 17 elevators, 17 escalators, and six baggage reclaim belts.
The Chennai airport is an important hub in South India and is crucial for the economic growth of the region. The new terminal building will provide a world-class experience to passengers and will help boost the airport’s status as an important gateway to South India.
During his visit, the Prime Minister also launched several other infrastructure projects, including the Rs 61 crore worth of renovation work for the Kalaivanar Arangam, a cultural centre in Chennai. He also laid the foundation stone for the Discovery Campus of IIT Madras, which is expected to be completed by 2025 and will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 1,000 crore.
The Prime Minister’s visit to Chennai and the launch of these projects highlights the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and connectivity in the country.
