Karnataka to Cover PM Modi's Rs 80 Lakh Hotel Bill for Mysuru Visit

Karnataka’s state government has announced it will pay the Rs 80 lakh hotel bill incurred during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mysuru last April. This visit was to commemorate 50 years of Project Tiger. The expense, initially estimated at Rs 3 crore, ultimately totaled Rs 6.33 crore. The National Tiger Conservation Authority is expected to cover the remaining Rs 3.3 crore.

Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre confirmed the decision, explaining that it is customary for the state to host dignitaries such as the Prime Minister. However, due to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) being in force during the Assembly elections, the state was not involved in the event’s planning, which was managed by the central government.

During the visit to the Bandipur and Mudumalai Tiger Reserves, the central government’s original budget was around Rs 3 crore. However, the actual expenditure reached approximately Rs 6.33 crore. Consequently, Karnataka’s forest department has written to the National Tiger Conservation Authority for reimbursement of the additional Rs 3.3 crore.

Khandre addressed media reports indicating that the hotel where the Prime Minister stayed was considering legal action to recover the dues. He stated that the state government will handle the Rs 80 lakh hospitality bill, ensuring that the matter is resolved amicably without any further complications.

The minister emphasized that this payment aligns with the tradition of state hospitality for visiting dignitaries. He clarified that the central government initially took on the planning due to the election period’s constraints, but the state now takes responsibility for the incurred costs.

In response to concerns about the high cost of the visit, Khandre assured that the state’s decision to cover the expenses reflects its commitment to upholding protocol and maintaining good relations with the central government. He also noted that the reimbursement request to the National Tiger Conservation Authority is part of standard procedure.

The Prime Minister’s visit to commemorate Project Tiger’s 50th anniversary included significant engagements at the Bandipur and Mudumalai reserves. These events highlighted India’s efforts in wildlife conservation and drew national attention to the ongoing initiatives to protect tigers and their habitats.

Khandre concluded by reiterating that the Karnataka government is dedicated to resolving any financial issues related to such high-profile visits. He expressed confidence that the matter will be settled swiftly and in accordance with established practices.

This development underscores the complexities involved in organizing state visits by top officials, especially during sensitive periods like election campaigns. It also highlights the importance of clear communication and coordination between state and central authorities to manage logistics and financial responsibilities effectively.
