Kerala politicians call for ban on film about women joining IS Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala opposes censorship Kerala Chief Minister accuses film of spreading hate propaganda Kerala Story to release in theatres on May 5 The upcoming release of the film “The Kerala Story” has created controversy in the state of Kerala, with political parties and theatre exhibitors taking opposing stances on its release.
The film reportedly tells the story of how thousands of young women were brainwashed into joining the Islamic State (IS) and heading off to countries like Syria and Afghanistan. However, official records reportedly show no such data. Political parties in Kerala, including the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), have opposed the film’s release in the state, claiming that it spreads lies and propaganda. Kerala culture and youth affairs minister Saji Cheriyan also stated on Facebook that the movie is an attempt by the Sangh Parivar to destroy the secular fabric of the state and create unrest in society.
On the other hand, members of the Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK) have stated that banning the film is not of any use since the audience will watch it when it releases on OTT platforms anyway. They believe that banning a film sets a bad precedent and is akin to censorship. One FEUOK office bearer, Suresh Shenoy, reportedly said that this was a propaganda film and the othering of Muslims should be viewed in the context of various efforts made by the Sangh Parivar to gain an advantage in electoral politics in Kerala.
Despite opposition from political parties, the film is set to release in theatres on May 5. Some actors have also come out in support of the film and believe that it should not be banned.
The controversy surrounding “The Kerala Story” highlights the sensitive nature of politics and religion in India. Films that touch on these issues often become the subject of debate and calls for censorship. The film’s release will likely be closely watched by both supporters and opponents, and its success or failure at the box office could have wider implications for the entertainment industry in India.
The controversy over “The Kerala Story” raises important questions about freedom of expression and the role of art in society. While political parties may have their own agendas, it is ultimately up to the audience to decide whether or not they want to watch the film. Whether it is banned or not, the film’s impact and legacy will be shaped by how it is received by the public.
